Stroke Sander motor problems J.C.

I'm having a problem with a stroke sander. It's 220V single phase and there is a switch to get the motor to turn clockwise or counter clockwise.

The problem is if you turn the switch to make it go clockwise, it reluctantly turns counter clockwise at a fraction of the speed it should go. If you turn the switch to make it go counter clockwise, it reluctantly turns clockwise at the fraction of the speed it should go.

It's just a basic machine, no computer controls or anything fancy. If anyone has any ideas what could be wrong, it would be greatly appreciated
